W-o-What?

After reading posts on other people lj's and another one on PA, it seems to me that this World of Warcraft (from this point foward referred to as WoW) is hot stuff right now. Because of its constant mentioning in my conversations, I've decided to research this new craze myself, and realized that I know nothing about RPG gaming. Seriously, if someone were to tell me that they just reached a level 60 and now own the master sword, I would probably stutter some sort of response and try to steer the conversation in another direction.

I've always been a little prejeduced toward RPGers (read my post about five things that annoy me and you'll know). I just never really understood why you would make up and entire 'world' and pretend you're someone or something you're not. And what's up with the 12-sided die? Why not just get two six sided die? Or for that matter, start playing craps. or parcheesi. Or another game I would understand. Also, what is a PvP? Someone please explain these things to me.

Now I'm going to go wake up my brother and see if he wants to play Parcheesi.

haha, you should see my old posts about morrowind-i would write about how much fun i had going out and killing people, or freeing slaves or what not...sigh...it gave my life purpose.

So that's why people play these games? to have a purpose?

Not really. It's different for alot of people. For me, I play RPG's for kind of the same reason I read books. I want to experience something that I can't experience in the real world. To be able to fly, to fight some great evil threatening everything, to cast magic, that sort of thing. I know other people who play RPG's as a kind of character exploration; they like getting inside the head of a character, and trying to make them come to life. Other people just like rolling dice and killing monsters; for them it's really not much different from playing a game like monopoly, where you're just trying to overcome set obstacles.

I can understand that.

I play the games because they entertain. Never have i wanted to be a character. Rather, they're fun because they're more involved than some other games (like shooting games).

In the end, I never finish them because they just go on and on.

Yeah, one of my good friends just could never get into RPG's. They were just too long. For some people, that's the case. For me, I actually love RPG's precisely BECAUSE they're long. The shorter an RPG is, the less time it has to tell a fulfilling story, and usually, the less satisfying it is. I like console RPG's because they tell a story that interests me. I like tabletop RPG's, and to a lesser extent, MMORPG's, because I can explore what it's like to be someone or do something impossible. I've always wanted to fly: in City of Heroes, I can. The idea of magic intrigues me: in World of Warcraft, I can be a mage, and blast things with fireballs.

Sean told me that PvP means "player vs. player" or something. He thinks RPG's are lame, by the way. So do I.
